Running cheat sheet for new mums

Have you just had a baby and want to start running again?

Are you unsure about whether your body is ready to run again?

Do you have any concerns about the risks of running on your pelvic floor?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then seeing a women’s health physiotherapist can help you find an answer that you are looking for.

Your physiotherapist will assess you in your first appointment and screen for any risk factors that may need to be addressed before you start running. A typical first appointment will generally assess the following if needed:

1. Pelvic floor strength and function

2. Lower body strength and stability

3. Abdominal separation and core strength

4. Balance

5. Lower back mobility and strength

6. Aches and pains

To make things clearer as well, there is post-natal checklist that can be assessed to see if you are physically ready to start running. Some of the major points on the checklist include:

1. Waiting 3 months after having your baby

2. Single leg heel raises, squats and hopping

3. No pelvic floor symptoms and good strength

4. Strong core

If you have just had a baby, book your appointment with a women’s health physiotherapist today and see how your recovery is going!
